Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in Women

HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause different types of cancers, the most prevelant being cervical cancer in women.

There are over 30 types of HPV that affect the genitals specifically in both men and women. The HPV Types 16 and 18 has been known to cause up to 70% of cervical cancer in the U.S. The HPV Types 6 and 11 causes 90% of genital warts and in some cases a rare cancer of the mouth and throat. The HPV virus alone has no signs or symptoms. the only way to detect it is through specific testing of the uterine cells collected during a Pap Smear. Most doctors do not recommend the HPV test for women under 30 with a normal Pap result. But with the virus on the rise, you should speak to your gynecologist to see if you should have the test. You must be open and honest about your sexual history so that your doctor can make informed decisions. Most women don't know they have HPV until it develops into something more serious. Scientists agree that women who have been exposed to the virus through sexual contact, are smokers, and have had more than 6 unprotected sexual encounters are at the highest risk of developing cervical cancer at some time in their life.

Pap Smear ImageWomen who get their yearly Pap Smear test are the most likely to survive the disease when it is caught early as the cells are in the pre-cancerous stages. Regular Pap Smears can detect the cells before they turn to cancer. There are treatments for pre-cancerous cells (cervical dysplasia). It can take many years for the pre-cancerous cells to develop after the woman has been infected with HPV. Every year over 250,000 women between the ages of 25 - 35 are diagnosed with the condition. With proper and immediate treatment, most cases will not develop into cervical cancer. Over 80% of women diagnosed with cervical dysplasia have been found to be infected with HPV.

One way to prevent cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer is to prevent the HPV virus in women. The drug Gardasil from Merck was introduced in 2006 as a vaccination for use in young girls and women age 9 - 26. The drug protects against the four types of HPV virus in women that cause genital warts and cervical cancer. Most physicians recommend the vaccination before girls are sexually active to have full protection from the virus.

Gardasil InjectionFor those who are already sexually active, Gardasil can still be effective, but even with the vaccine you must take the proper precautions. Starting with never having any unprotected sex, vaginal or oral.

Condoms have been proven to be 97% effective in protecting both sexual partners from HIV, HPV, and other sexually transmitted diseases. For safe oral sex, couples should use barrier protection as well. There are many different fun and interesting items that will protect you during oral sex. Dental dam must be used for oral sex with a woman. Condoms must be used for oral sex with a man. It's that simple.

Remember that having hpv does not mean you have done anything wrong. it is not a reflection on you, your character, or your values.

I feel that hpv virus in women is terrible and don't wish it on anyone. i do agree with javonica that abstinence is the best way to prevent the disease. good luck all...

Hpv is an epidemic. didn't anyone get taught in school that abstinence is the only full proof way not to catch an std? if you are a young woman who is going to engage in sexual activity despite all the warnings then please at least use some type of protection such as a condom. but even condoms aren't 100% safe. if you don't want to catch hpv then don't fool around and make sure you know your partner is clean.

Unfortunately, std rates soar worldwide!!! use a condom to protect your sex life!!!! a friend who works for a std dating == pozsapces.com ==(whether i spell the site correctly) told me that the new subscribers have increased 200% over 2008. rising std rate sparks online dating sites.

I noticed a very tiny bump on my vag about a month ago, i previously had an std test and a pap and the doctor told me i was clean. they said the bump was too underdeveloped to tell if it was something. a month later it got a little bigger and i got it removed (not fun). they tested it and told me today that i have hpv... no idea how to tell my partner.

I found out i had hpv 2 days ago, i've been given a referral for a gyno but can't afford the appointment. this was my first pap test in 8 years, i wont get my results back until i can find the money for my gyno appointment. i am strugling to find the words to tell my bf as i know what his reaction will be. i've been sleeping on the couch to avoid getting close to him. i am also a smoker and have had 4 deaths in my mums side of the family and my grandmother also gets regular skin cancer. i am terrified. girls please have regular pap tests, if it's caught early you'll be fine. and use a condom unless you've both been tested prior to having intercourse, it's not worth the possible damage!

I'm 25 and have had hpv for 4 years now. i've had two leeps (removal of part of the cervix) and they haven't been able to get all the precancer cells. to all the young ladies, use condoms, get your yearly check ups and get any procedure your doctor tells you to in a timely manner. get a second opinion of course. hpv can give you cancer. if you have to have part of your cervix removed, it can lead to infertility or a historectomy. a thin cervix has trouble supporting a pregnancy and miscarriages are common. this mostly only happens in women who have had to have multiple leeps. i am the mother of a beautiful 6 year old boy, and it pains me to know that he might be the only biological child i get to have. be careful!

Okay i just finished coming back from the my doctor and at this appointment i knew i had hpv becuz of the pap i did 2 weeks before...she had to take a close look at my abnormal cell. its jus like a regular pap but painful!!!!! first she uses a ultrason to view the cells and you also can see it becuz its on a screen she show me.she was looking for red vessels or anything else other then the abnormal cells so she didn\'y see any of that. sooo then the painful part comes becuz she has to take a biopsy which means she had to pinch the abnormal cells with a device to send it to the lab after she\"s done with that another painful part comes she had to scrap away the abnormal cells with was the worst part!!!!!! after i had really bad craps!!! so now i have to wait 2 weeks to get the results

Hi gang, i am 33 and just found out yesterday that i have hpv. the doctor told me that it is a virus, with minimal symptoms if any in women. there are no symptoms for men. she said i could have contracted it years ago and not known it. (my paps have always been negative, except for about 10 years ago one was abnormal.) she said the virus can lay dormant in your body for a long time (years), but it can also leave your body. since it is a virus, we don't really know how long it can stay go. i am getting a procedure done next week to check out the abnormal cells, but i recommend going back to the gyno for regular check-ups. this is the only way to really know what is going on in your body. i would not stress about cancer or anything. just get the check-ups and your doctor will help you from there. it can take years for the virus to develop into cancer, but if you get regular check-ups you should be ok. take care everybody. i understand. seriously...

I am 30 yrs old and last year in december i was diagnosed with hpv high risk with a normal pap smear and they told me to return in 6 mos to see if it infact is hpv. i had unprotected sex with my boyfriend whos stds test came back negative and i think he is the one i got it from since there is no test for men. we are not together anymore but i did inform him. the nurse said that most of the time the virus clears up on its own but stays dormant. she gave me some type of relief when she said for me not to worry about it since my results came back normal but i am anxious for that upcoming appnt and the results. that same visit i also had a yeast infection and got a creme for that but i still feel its still there. theres no odor or anything and every now and then feel itchiness and something jsut doesnt feel right now its march and i plan too make an appnt because i read from the symptoms of itchiness are signs of vulvar cancer or maybe i just need a stronger yeast infection treatment?? this is all too scary i wish this virus neve existed! where did it come from??! how does it form??!
